Welcome to San Mateo

Located between Burlingame to the north, Foster City and the San Francisco Bay to the east, Belmont to the south, and Hillsborough to the west, San Mateo is one of the largest cities on the Peninsula and an ideal location for commuters. Its bustling, urban downtown area, multitude of recreational and outdoor activities, and well-ranked school system ensure a perfect fit for families with children.

Located between Burlingame to the north, Foster City and the San Francisco Bay to the east, Belmont to the south, and Hillsborough to the west, San Mateo is one of the largest cities on the Peninsula. Its central location is ideal for commuters. A Caltrain station is located downtown, and by car the city is a mere thirty-minute commute to downtown San Jose and twenty-five minutes from downtown San Francisco. With a population of over 98,000 and spanning 15 square miles, San Mateo is also one of the largest Peninsula cities.

Like much of the Peninsula, San Mateo enjoys a relatively temperate Mediterranean climate, with dry, warm summers and mild winters. Average winter temperatures hover in the mid-50s with summer temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s. The Montara Mountain block of the Santa Cruz Mountains generally blocks the San Francisco fog, but ocean weather can bring gusty afternoons during the summer months.

San Mateo is well known for its robustly developed downtown area, to which many residents of neighboring cities flock for the best dining, shopping, and entertainment options. Roughly bordered by Tilton Avenue, 9th Avenue, Delaware Street, and El Camino Real, downtown San Mateo boasts over 800 shops, restaurants, and a movie theater, many of which are housed in beautiful historic buildings. For those seeking the outdoors, San Mateo is also home to Central Park, which features walking paths, tennis courts, a picnic area, a playground, a baseball field, a recreation center with scheduled activities, Japanese tea garden, and live weekly jazz concerts. Another marquee feature of San Mateo is Coyote Point, a small peninsula that juts out into the San Francisco Bay, which is home to Poplar Creek Golf Course, the CuriOdyssey natural history museum, as well as a wide variety of activities such as windsurfing, bicycling, fishing, sailing, and boating in the marina and breakwater.

Due to the large amount of neighborhoods in San Mateo, housing prices vary greatly but the average for a single-family home is around $1 million. The city generally attracts a diverse group of residents, from entry-level homeowners seeking their first home in the upcoming neighborhoods of Parkside, Shoreview, or the Village, to more established, larger-sized families seeking larger-sized land plots and homes.
