The city of San Carlos has a long and rich history. Originally home to the Lamchin Indian tribe, the area was settled by Spanish explorers in the late 1700s. The California gold rush in the late 19th century brought a new wave of settlers. Disenchanted Sierra Nevada prospectors parceled and settled much of the Peninsula land including Belmont, Redwood City, and San Carlos.

San Carlos is home to a small craft airport as well as the Hiller Aviation Museum located on Skyway Road. The high-ranking San Carlos public education system is a huge draw for families with school-aged children. Education options include a choice of four elementary schools (Arundel, Brittan Acres, Heather, and White
Oaks), three middle schools (Central, Tierra Linda, and Charter), as well as St. Charles K-8 private school. San Carlos does not have its own high school, with the majority of students attending nearby Carlmont High School in Belmont or Sequoia in Redwood City.
