Located 20 miles south of San Francisco in San Mateo County, Foster City is an outdoor-lovers’ paradise. Water sports and activities such as windsurfing, boating, and swimming are popular pastimes, as residents take advantage of the city’s extensive protected canal system. Foster City was ranked by Forbes magazine as #10 on their list of “America’s Top 25 Towns to Live Well” in 2009.

Foster City began as a planned community in the 1960s thanks to the vision of T. Jack Foster, after which the city was named. It was organized and developed with recreation in mind—a fact that still holds true today. The city’s 160 acres of parks and open space, numerous public tennis courts, golf courses, baseball and soccer fields, and plethora of water activities including world-class windsurfing, boating, fishing, and swimming make Foster City a paradise for those who love the outdoors. Housing developments surround a 212-acre artificial lagoon that winds through the center of the city. Foster City’s temperate climate averages in the low 50s in the winter and in the high 60s to low 70s in the summer, making outdoor recreational activities a year-round affair.

Foster City has a current population of 32,337, and like much of the San Francisco Peninsula, home values continue to appreciate. Foster City has a toprated education system with three elementary and one middle school within its boundaries. Residents also have access to nearby San Mateo schools, which are among the best in the area. The city is primarily residential and lacks a formal downtown area, but Edgewater Shopping Center off Edgewater Road features a waterside boardwalk as well as a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and services.

Foster City is home to several large corporations including Gilead, Visa, and Sony and is a short commute from both downtown San Francisco (45 minutes) and Hillsdale (30 minutes).
