Welcome to Belmont

Spanning four and a half square miles and with a population of just over 26,000, Belmont is a serene, residential town with a decidedly rural feel. Nestled amidst rolling hills, its sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay and small-town atmosphere make it an ideal destination for commuter families wishing to escape the hectic pace of city life.

At four and a half square miles, Belmont is a small, serene, upscale residential city with a decidedly rural feel. In recent years, the city has seen a rise in population as Silicon Valley executives and San Francisco defectors flock to this suburban haven. Belmont is located halfway between San Jose and San Francisco with access to Caltrain (Belmont station), making it a prime location for commuters. With a population of just over 26,000, Belmont retains its smalltown charm and affluence at a relaxed pace of life.

Belmont has a storied history. The city’s heritage hails back to William “Billy” Chapman Ralston, founder of the Bank of California and builder of San Francisco’s historic Palace Hotel. Completed in 1967, Ralston built his masterful Italian-inspired country home, Raleston Hall, on what is now the site of Notre Dame de Namur University. Originally part of the Rancho de las Puglas Spanish land grant (to which the city’s main thoroughfare, Alameda de las Pulgas, still pays homage), Belmont was officially incorporated in 1926.

The city of Belmont is nestled amidst rolling hills, which provide spectacular scenic views of the San Francisco peninsula and bay. Belmont is home to the beautiful Norte Dame de Namur University (located in the Antique Forrest Homes neighborhood), and is part of the prestigious Belmont-Redwood Shores school district. Both Carlmont High School and Ralston Middle School have received California Distinguished School honors.

Belmont is a family-friendly city with many entertainment and recreation options to choose from. John Brooks Memorial open space, which includes the locally famous Waterdog Lake, boasts miles of wooded hill trails perfect for an afternoon outing. Pick up local produce at the Sunday Farmers’ Market on El Camino Real, and enjoy the newly refurbished library located in the Belmont Woods neighborhood. Belmont’s downtown area (which underwent a revitalization in 2011), features local and national retail stores as well as many dining options to choose from.
